Roll the cameras for SD!

October 23, 2009

If you are visiting, or even volunteering at a project, you may want to bring your experience to a wider audience afterwards, and maybe encourage people to donate to the cause that has interested you so much. A fantastic way of recording your experience or telling a story linked to the project is to film it.

This sounds easy, right? All you need is a video camera and some time!

Well, if you don’t want your piece of film to be a mere collection of disjointed images, you need to have some kind of story behind your film, or what journalists call an “angle” or a “hook”. What is the main focus of your film? What are you trying to say? What message would you like the audience to come away with? Once you have established this, you will have a better idea of what scenes you need to film.

And then there are more technical considerations to take into account, things like sound, light, editing and music, and when to use long shots or close-ups. Pierce Vaughn, a young Subud film-maker, has set out some very helpful guidelines you can use when making documentaries.

Remember, an informative and interesting film could make all the difference for people uncertain as to whether or not to donate to the project, or find out more about the issues surrounding it!
