Human Force Volunteer Camps for Social Change

2010 Human Force Volunteer Camp in Mexico

Spread the word to all young people you know — Subud and non-Subud!

Last year, Alexandra Woodward (US) and Osanna Favre (Australia) worked with SDI to run the first Volunteer Camp at Amanecer, Colombia, then under the name “Volunteers without Tears.” The two girls then applied to join “Quest at Congress” this January in Christchurch, to develop future plans for their volunteer project.

This year the new and improved Human Force Volunteer Camp will take place at Usaha Mulia Abadi (UMA) project in Mexico. Young people from Mexico and around the world will join forces to help this SDI social project. They will unite through education, personal discovery and human effort. Each young person will leave with a stronger sense of the ‘I’ that is within, as well as their relationship to community and worldwide social change.

The program will have three components:

1. Working with community — young people will spend part of each day working in teams on one of three community projects:

  • Art and creativity workshops for children,
  • An ecological forest maintenance project, and
  • An eco-tourism project involving building a camp site.

2. Working with self — Young people will participate in a range of fun, creative and interactive personal development activities that will support them in the procerss of:

  • Reflecting on their life and themselves
  • Integrating their volunteering experience
  • Exploring how they want to impact on the world

3. Learning about social development ~ through a series of evening activities and guest speakers from the community, young people will learn about the forces and factors that have shaped the community and the region in which they will be working. They will explore the questions: What makes some communities different from others? Why are some rich and some poor? What are the historical, social and economic factors that affect the way communities develop? What does it mean for me?

The volunteers will leave with new, practical skills; a special connection with this local community; new friends from around the world; an expanded, empowered sense of who they are and how they can effect change; and “field” experience in international work and community development that they can put on their C.V.! What an opportunity!

We need your help to make this unique “inner-outer” experience a reality for local and international youth. To donate go to http://donations.susiladharma.org/donate_now/index.shtml and select Youth Volunteer Fund 2010 from the drop down menu.
