Thank you, Mathilde, for sharing your experiences at Vivir in Ecuador.
I have visited the clinic and met Dr. Garzon's husband, Marco and son Xavier Benjamine.
I will attest to your testimony.
I am inspired to return to Ecuador and volunteer some time and talent to this worthwhile program. I have seen firsthand the good work that is done at the clinic in Tumbaco. My friend, Rosanna took me there in 2009.
My Subud Enterprise, a Home Vision Training Program, is sharing some proceeds to this project through Susila Dharma, Portland.

Dear Solen,

I have been following your field diary keenly! Renee, who had been here in India also suggested I get in touch with you.

I share the sentiments you have when you returned home from the projects. Yes sometimes work is 'darn' difficult...

I will write in more detail at your email ID which Renee has provided me.

Best regards,

Gopinath Parakuni

Gopi, thanks for the encouragement.
I'll try to post a final version in the next couple of weeks - my time at Amanecer has come to a close now!

Cassidy, I think we encounter 'mean spiritedness' more often than we acknowledge in course of development or human rights work. I agree with you that communication is a good way to address this issue. I would also suggest building durable friendships all around, without being manipulative. We have to take care that we do not do anything to spite others or to show off our power or influence.

Yet, should we back off from a just fight? I do not think so. When there is a conflict, we must be doubly careful that we know the deep causes of the conflict. We need to approach the issue with humility and a willingness to learn as we try to address the situation.

Yes, open communication is a definite way of resolving conflict and dealing with 'mean-spiritedness'

Recently S.A. Samy, who runs the Centre for Cultural Development in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, wrote a letter to the SDIA office outlining recent problems between CCD and the local granite quarrying industry. Local competition for scarce resources, suspicion, and general agressive attitudes were also the problem. I am struck by the similarity between Samy's problem and this situation in Colombia. It seems that one of the things SD projects have to be able to deal with is the negative reactions of local organizations who can feel threatened. Part of the solution is communication, but there is also an element of mean-spiritedness that is really hard to address. I am wondering how many projects run into these problems and how they handle them?

Dear Patricia,
It is the Centenary Year for the Worldwide Girl Guide Movement (founded by Baden-Powell in England) this year. Our small grand-daughter chose the crisis in Haiti as her project to share with her (very small) group of Guides in the local Guide Troop as part of this programme. She will be so interested to see what you are doing. It is truly wonderful. Do you think the international Guide and Scout Movement would be interested in supporting your sustainable village?
With all good wishes,
Faith Rohana Bourne
